Paul Smith, an artist originally from Sunderland but now based in London, has garnered recognition through various competitions and awards such as the Wells Art Contemporary, Jackson’s Open Painting Prize, and the Contemporary Painting Prize, among others. His artwork delves into themes of the lost and the found, focusing on elements that are fading from memory and what remains as traces in the landscape. Smith’s practice has long involved exploring and documenting abandoned and post-industrial landscapes, particularly those in the Northeast of England, capturing their transient essence.

In his more recent works, Smith’s exploration of locales on the brink of reverting to an unofficial wilderness is intertwined with the use of found materials. This comparison informs his artistic process, leading to a broader consideration of layering and cutting techniques, the process of collage by which territory is shaped into landscape by human action. His art captures the delicate balance between nature reclaiming spaces and the remnants of human presence, reflecting on the passage of time and memory within the landscape.
