James Johnston, a painter and musician, turned to figurative painting as a way to overcome writer’s block while on tour, initially working on a small scale in hotel rooms. This creative outlet eventually evolved into his primary focus, becoming a daily studio practice. Johnston’s paintings are characterized by bold and loose brushstrokes, and a rich, striking use of colour. His imagery often straddles the line between the everyday and the imaginary, producing works that are unsettling, totemic, and darkly humorous. Despite their complex themes, his paintings maintain a sense of simplicity and beauty, drawing viewers into a world where the ordinary and the fantastical coexist. In his exploration of the natural world, he quickly overthrows expectations, rendering familiar landscapes and creatures in a manner that is at once familiar and uncanny. Through the brilliant use of anthropomorphism, he imbues his subjects with a sense of life and personality, inviting audiences to contemplate the complexities of the human experience mirrored in the world around us.
